Let’s say these Park Rangers had actual sightings but obviously got size wrong.

I used to think a good explanation for the Orang Pendek was that of a new sub-species of Orangutan in Sumatra that long ago had migrated to the jungle floor, become more bi-pedal and over time become slightly
smaller given the increased food competition.

Hadn’t thought about this before but this sighting raises another plausible possibility. That the Orang Pendek might be some very primitive type of unknown negrito. Would explain a lot. You can start with the Veddah legends from Sri Lanka. Orang Pendek might not be an ape, but perhaps a primitive human. Only speculation.

Well, this amounts to a mainstream search for a cryptid. Sounds like everyone involved is a national park employee, or with a mainstream environmental organization, doing his or her job.

@ McClarinJ: Your post, regarding the estimated size/mass of the alleged Sumatran pygmies/Orang Pendek(?) really hit home; these creatures, if indeed accurately described, are TINY.

To look at it another way: I checked my son’s birth records. He was full term and emerged weighing 8lbs 13oz, and all of 20″ in length – approximately the same measurements ascribed to the Sumatran pygmies. Wow!

I certainly hope there is more to this story in the coming months. Guess we’ll wait & see…

It would be nice if we the scientists could now see them and maybe study them and move the discussion further than “that man in that suit “

If true then we are looking at people less than half the height of Flores man (~42 inches) and potentially less than one-eighth the weight, probably less than all but the most emaciated adult house cat.
